Once upon a time, the eldest son of King Bali Banasura decided to become Shiva’s son after being mesmerized by the beauty of Shiva’s son Kartikeya. Banasur did hard penance. Bhole baba was pleased and accepted him as his son and also gave him the ‘Shonitpur’ capital as a gift. Kumar Kartikeya also gave his younger brother Banasur a flag as bright as fire and a peacock as his vehicle.

Overwhelmed by the pride of his strength, Banasur repeatedly defeated the deities in battles. But a time came when the daughter of Sahastrabahu Banasura named Usha fell in love with Aniruddha, the son of Shrikrishna’s son Pradyumna. Usha’s friend, the nymph Chitralekha went directly to Dwarka. She brought him to the city of Banasura and got them both married.

When Banasura came to know about this, he fought and made Aniruddha a prisoner. What were it then that Shrikrishna attacked the city of Banasura with his entire army. In the war, Krishna’s Narayani army was on the one side, and Banasura’s army was on the other side, which was getting the support of Lord shiva and Kartikeya.

By riding on Garuda, Shrikrishna, Balram, and Pradyumna were destroying the army of Banasura. But as soon as Lord Shankar saw that Shri Krishna was killing the demon army and there was a stampede in his army, he turned red with anger. Lord Shankar ran towards Shri Krishna on a chariot decorated with Nandi.

In the ‘Ganas’ of Lord Shiva, some had a lion’s face, and some had an elephant’s face, but all of them were suffering from the arrows of Shri Krishna.

At that time, riding on Nandi, Shiva started a war with Shri Krishna, who was riding on Garuda. The earth started trembling when Shri Hari took Parjanyaastra in his hand. Many mountains started falling like streams of water. The thunderstorms began on the floor from all sides. Indra roared and started shedding blood.

Meanwhile, surrounded by all the gods, Brahma started watching this war from the sky.

Lord Shiva attacked Shrikrishna with Aagneyaastra as soon as Shrikrishna left his Paarjnyaastra. So much fire came out of this weapon that everyone on the battlefield thought Sri Krishna riding on Garuda, Balarama, and Pradyumna, was killed. But when Shrikrishna used his Varunaastra, Mahadeva’s weapon became cool down by this weapon.

Again Mahadeva left four weapons, Paishaach, Rakshas, Raudra, and Angiraas, which looked like a holocaust. After this, Shrikrishna used his Vaayvaastra, saavitraastra, Aindraastra, and Mohanaastra. Shrikrishna used his Vaishnvaastra as soon as the four weapons of Mahadeva became calm. The darkness prevailed in the whole world through this weapon.

The body of Lord Shiva started burning by that radiance. Angry Shiva took four hooded bows in his hand. Meanwhile, Shrikrishna took up his Jrimbhanaastra and made Mahadeva suffer from yawning. It means Lord Shiva went into laziness, and his anger calmed down. After seeing this, All the living beings trembled.

That time the trembling Prithvi ji reached Brahma and started requesting him to pacify this war. Mahadev’s anger completely calmed down on Brahma ji’s explanation. Forgetting the enmity with Shrikrishna, he went away from the battlefield. But Kartikeya retreated after being defeated by Lord Krishna only. After this, it was the turn of Banasura. Banasura continued to fight with Shri Krishna one after the other. Finally, Lord Shri Hari cut off his thousands of hands with Sudarshan Chakra.

As soon as Shri Krishna went to kill him with his chakra, Mahadev reached there again with Kartikeya, but this time he requested Shrikrishna to forgive Banasura. Mahadeva explained to Shrikrishna that he had given Banasura safe passage, and he requested Shri Krishna to forgive Banasura so that his words did not go in vain. Shri Hari also accepted Shiva’s prayer and forgave him. Shri Krishna left from there with Aniruddha-Usha and along with his entire army.

Then Lord Shiva gave five boons to Banasura.

  1. You will always remain immortal.
  2. The devotees who dance like Banasura for my pleasure will be blessed with a son.
  3. All the pain in your body will be calm.
  4. By the name of Mahakal, your fame will remain constant.
  5. There will not be any types of ugliness in your body.

After giving these blessings to Banasura, Lord Shiva disappeared in front of his eyes, along with all his ganas. Hence the most explosive battle of the universe came to an end.

So have you seen how Lord Shiva fought a fierce battle with Shri Hari after being infatuated with his son? However, he ended the war with Shri Krishna to protect the universe and the demons. Along with saving the life of Banasura, he also brought him on the right path.
